The Seattle Seahawks have signed free-agent kicker Jeff Reed according to their official website.
The 32 year old Reed finished last season with NFC West rivals San Fransisco and seemed to be getting his aim back after being cut from the Pittsburgh Steelers, his longtime team after a dismal start to the 2010 season. The veteran will challenge Brandon Cuoto, a technical rookie who was drafted by the ‘Hawks in 2008, but released in 2009 for the Seahawks’ kicking job.
Reed is well known to Seahawk fans as a member of the 2005 Steelers team that defeated the ‘Hawks in the Super Bowl, and when coupled with his often eccentric behaviour, may not be a popular choice. Still, as an owner of two Super Bowl rings and a career field goal percentage over 80%, he would bring a decidedly veteran presence to a very young team. That said, his possession of the final job is in no way guaranteed, and the battle for a position which has not been stable since the departure of Josh Brown looks to once again be a highlight of this year’s pre-season.
