Zach Miller Is A Seahawk…
The ‘Hawks are pulling no punches in free agency. They’ve now committed $35.5 million in guarantees, to two pass catchers in less than a week.
Former Raider tight end and 2010 Pro Bowler Zach Miller, 25, agreed to terms with the Seahawks on a 5 year $34 million contract, with $17 million guaranteed. Huge.
Just so happens that Sidney Rice secured a nifty little guarantee of his own to the tune of $18.5 million from Seattle last week.
The Seahawks are making two things clear – 1. they’re willing to spend money, and 2. they’re going to set Tarvaris Jackson up with as many weapons as they possibly can.
The addition of Miller to the team does not automatically mean that John Carlson will be traded. In fact, Pete Carroll stressed today that the team is excited about the prospects of both guys playing at the same time.
Seattle is going to run the football this year. No secret. 3 O-linemen in the first three rounds of the last two drafts, a top free agent guard (Robert Gallery) and the addition of one of the leagues top O-line/running game coaches (Tom Cable) to the staff make that very clear.
The run is going to have to set up the pass, and thus, having two capable blocking tight ends who can both block for the run and stretch the middle of the field as receivers, will give the offense the versatility it needs to allow an athletic QB like Tarvaris Jackson to utilize play-action and spread the ball around to multiple receivers.
A bold move, no doubt, bringing in Miller. But one that should send notice to the rest of the division that the Seahawks are no longer more concerned about a guy’s character or “high motor” than his talent.
This team wants the ball and they’re gonna score.
Chirp…chirp…
Tough crowd.
The Seahawks also signed second year safety, Brett Johnson, to a contract. Johnson went undrafted out of Cal in 2010 and ended last season with Buffalo. Depth move.
