Goodbye Matt….
I don’t have a ton to say about the departure of Matt Hasselbeck from Seattle, other than farewell to the best QB who ever put on a Seahawks uniform.
More than that, goodbye to one of the best people to ever put on a Seahawks uniform.
The last few years haven’t yielded the greatest in statistical accomplishment for Hasselbeck, but let’s face it…the guy got pummeled weekly and just didn’t have time to throw.
I have to say, I believe the failure of Seattle’s front office to offer a 2 year deal and bring him back should be viewed as just that – a failure. While Tarvaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst are younger and more athletic, neither of them have proven that they can win at this level. Matt has not just won. He’s won playoff games.
Seasons change, and every player’s career will come to an end at some point, but Matt showed no signs of significant decline, and in fact, got better as the year went on in 2010.
No use ranting about what might have been, but to let such a valuable piece leave over one year of an agreement (Matt apparently wanted 2 year minimum, ‘Hawks offered 1) when you have gaping cap space and QB is your biggest need, is foolish in my view.
Make no mistake, this is a complete reset. Tarvaris Jackson is not the answer, he’s just a cheap stop-gap to compete with Charlie.
Farewell Matt. You’ve done the city of Seattle proud.
