Seahawks Trade Out of 2nd Round, Nab Moffitt in 3rd
The Seahawks accomplished in day 2 what they failed to get done in the first round, when they traded out of the 2nd round to garner a 3rd round pick while adding a 4th and moving up in the 5th and 7th rounds. Here are the fine details of the deal:
Seattle gave up its second-round choice, 57th overall, plus a fifth (157) and seventh (209) for Detroit’s third (75), fourth (107), fifth (154) and seventh (205).
Did you catch that?
Then, in the 3rd round, with the 75th overall pick (acquired from Detroit in above trade), they selected John Moffitt, a guard out of Wisconsin.
At 6’4, 319lbs, Moffitt is an elite run blocker with impressive agility to get down field and erase opponents at the second level. He played at both guard and center at Wisconsin and brings some much needed versatility to the line where he could compete at all three interior positions. He displays an ability to take on multiple blockers and sustain at the point of attack and doesn’t let up.
As for negatives, he’s shown some vulnerability in pass protection in terms of dealing with quicker rushers from inside. He gets off the line well, but needs to move better laterally in the passing game, and isn’t an elite athlete.
In summary, Seattle gets another big, tough o-lineman with a high motor and a nasty streak, to add up front. He should compete right away for a starting role at left guard and/or center. They may have been able to nab him in the fourth round, where they hold the 2nd and 10th picks. Some will definitely view this as a reach, but it seems like Schneider, Carroll and Cable know what they want, and are going after it.
