Following the final game of the preseason, here are my initial 22 cuts to get the roster down to 53 players by Saturday.

I’ve also indicated those players who could be Practice Squad candidates, although I have to research whether or not each one of them are eligible.

Here we go:

Mitch Erickson (G) – PS
Joe Toledo (T)
Jacob Phillips (T) – PS
Jeff Byers (C) – PS
Brandon Jones (WR)
Ruvell Martin (WR)
T.J. Houshmandzadeh (WR) – yes, I went there…
Nick Tow-Arnett (TE) – PS
Julius Jones (RB)
Louis Rankin (RB)
Amon Gordon (DT)
Craig Terrill (DT)
James Wyche (DE)
Rob Rose (DE/DT) – PS
Matt McCoy (LB)

Interesting list… but we only have to cut 21 on Saturday (Hill is exempt for week 1 while he serves his suspension)

    Steve Vallos (G/C)
    Mitch Erickson (G) – PS
Joe Toledo (T) (Holy Toledo… maybe Cleveland needs him)
    Jacob Phillips (T) – PS
    Jeff Byers (C) – PS
    Brandon Jones (WR)
    Ruvell Martin (WR)
Ben Obumanu (WR) – No way we cut TJ
    Nick Tow-Arnett (TE) – PS
    Julius Jones (RB)
    Owen Schmitt(RB)
    Anthony McCoy (TE) PS
    Amon Gordon (DT)
    Craig Terrill (DT)
    Rob Rose (DE/DT) – PS
    Matt McCoy (LB)
    Joe Pawelek (LB) – PS
    Cord Parks (CB)
    Kennard Cox (CB) – PS
    Jordan Babineaux (S)

James Wyche (DE) will likely be released the following week to make room for Hill to come onto the active roster, unless Okung is healed – then it will likely be Polumbus.
JP Losman will be released and replaced by a rookie QB that doesn’t make a 53 elsewhere

And geoffrey… Babs is gone… sorry. No room for him in the new regime.

D Hawk is right…we technically only need to cut 21. However, I don’t consider a guy who plays 1 week then gets cut, a final 53 so I’m talking about guys who will be on the roster, and in the plans moving forward.

    Geoffrey,

Did you know that Housh is on the trading block this morning? Do you really think they’ll keep a guy who isn’t in the future plans, on the roster while he’s pissed, knowing that they tried to trade him? What have you seen about this current regime, that leads you to believe they’ll keep ANYONE on the roster who doesn’t fit the plan?

Then again, they may. But Housh in a bad mood, is not going to be good for this locker room or team, and there’s a good chance he ends up in a bad mood. Heard rumors from sources who have been at every practice, that they’re not too keen on his attitude already, which could be part of the reason they’re shopping him. He wants to be a No. 1, and he’s simply not that.

Polumbus is going nowhere. He’s in the plans. They traded for the guy. That means they targeted him. He knows the system and plays the zbs well.

But they can’t just cut Housh… we’d still eat his salary and then he could sign with anyone… like the 9ers. Housh would actually make them competitive.

As for Polumbus – they gave up a conditional 2012 pick. I think he is a stop-gap until Okung gets back. He struggled in Denver in pass protection – not sure what will make him turn the corner here. Cut him and sign Washington.

Housh was Mora’s guy. Mora convinced him to come here with Paul Allen’s seaplane and his own watch. New regime, new coaches. Housh probably didn’t feel like he is getting hand held and spoonfed like mora did, and feels wounded that he has to actually earn his spot despite his past accomplishments. I say good riddance housh…

They actually CAN just cut him. They can do whatever they want. Doesn’t mean that they will. But to say they can’t just cut him, is completely ridiculous. Hi-priced guys get cut all the time.

on Polumbus – he struggled in Denver’s non-Zone system last year. It’s a scheme move, not a pure talent move.

Did you see Polumbus playing RIGHT Tackle last night? That doesn’t equate to him being a stop-gap for Okung (Left Tackle).

He’s here to compete and push Locklear, with Willis injured.

Don’t worry about the money that it would cost to cut Housh or anyone else for that matter. It sounds crazy, but the teams are busineses just like any other; players contracts depreciate over time just like equipment such as a delivery van or office chair.

Think of an NFL team like a farm with really expensive livestock. If you’re a farmer and one of your cows gets struck by lightning you would write it off. If you lose a player, you can write off his contract in taxes. I did a report about this in college. It’s called roster depreciation and it’s really interesting subject. After you realize just how it works you will lose the lump in your throat….well maybe, LOL!!!

Just to clarify something I said, the teams write off a percentage of the player’s contract to depreciation every year, not just when things go South. They have a formula based on the average years a player would be expected to play in the league at their particular position. This way they don’t absorb the full cost of any player’s contract.

Wow, you think they’ll let Rankin go? Even after last night’s 99 yard kick return? I guess it could happen if we don’t really need him. Awww… We thought that run might give him some staying power!

They just better cut JJ before they axe him…

One play, unfortunately, isn’t enough to keep a player on. Especially when they plan on having Leon Washington be the kick returner.

I’m super exiced to see what Leon Washington can do for us when the games count. Charlie Whitehurst is getting exciting to watch, and when called on I know he’ll do great. I’m hoping for the shocker that he going to start over Hasselbeck so we can move on from the stagnation that was the last two seasons…

I think we’ll keep Housh (and Obamanu) and I would be surprised to see us release Vallos, since he has saved our butts a few times when O-linemen go down. I think we keep Babs again because he can play Corner too. that’s 4 off your list: here are the other 4 to go.
    Jamar Adams
    E.J Wilson
    Mike Gibson
Cameron Morrah (PS) (I think we just let Tow-Arnett go)

I also think Terril stays on the PS and we jettison Rose

Do you really think Pawelek plays/played better than McCoy at LB? I think McCoy makes PS and Pawelek is gone.

And Cord Parks has made an impression on Kick returns, so i think he makes PS and Brown goes instead.

    Tough year, tough call.

Finally – my opinion. I would have gotten rid of Locklear years ago.

Mike Gibson is the starting LG so he’s probably not going anywhere. He’s basically beaten Ben Hamilton out to start there.

E.J. Wilson will absolutely not be cut. He’s the No.2 strong-side defensive end, backing up Red Bryant. Yeah…not going anywhere.

Cameron Morrah has been taking the 2nd team reps at Tight End, and with Chris Baker hurt, again…I don’t see him going anywhere.
