Josh Wilson Traded to Baltimore

ESPN Insider Adam Schefter is reporting that the Seahawks have traded former second-round pick (55th overall in 2007) Josh Wilson to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick.

Wilson had been battling Kelly Jennings for Seattle’s No. 2 cornerback spot, and even started last Saturday against the Vikings, opposite of Marcus Trufant. He has also been a significant special teams contributor as a kickoff return specialist, and has shown a knack for making big plays as a nickel corner, having returned 3 interceptions for touchdowns since coming into the league in 2007.

The impressive physical play of Roy Lewis as well as the emergence of Walter Thurmond III this preseason are what seem to have made Josh Wilson expendable, as the revised Seattle defensive scheme favors defensive backs who can play physical at the line and are good in press coverage. This criteria is more characteristic of Trufant, Jennings, Lewis and Thurmund III than it is Wilson, and therefore John Schneider must have seen an opportunity to either replenish or stockpile another pick for next season.

Wilson’s value, in my opinion, reflects that of something closer to a low third or high fourth-round pick, but early reports suggest that the conditional fifth-rounder acquired by Seattle in this deal, could become a fourth if certain undisclosed conditions are met.

That’s BS, Jennings isn’t a phyical corner..Josh Wilson , possibly is the best cornerback on the team

Uhhhh…no. He wasn’t the best corner on the team. And yes, Jennings is better in press coverage. He’s got better hips to turn upfield and uses his hands well at the line. As for making plays on the ball, Josh Wilson is much better.

However, Trufant is the best CB on the team, hands down, no debate.

    Quick analysis: It sucks.

Expanded analysis: Baltimore just lost a starting CB and was at a position of weakness. Seattle had depth, and was in a position of strength. Still, we gave up a starting CB that we took in the 2nd round, and that is living up to his potential, for a 4th / 5th round pick. We were raped.

Someone must have forgotten that we had Trufant to make that comment. I like Jennings, and was a big supporter of him going into last year. He is good in press coverage… his problem is that he can’t make plays. He can have the WR blanketed, but does he can’t make a play on the ball and the WR comes down with it.

I can see making the trade – I just don’t think it was enough compensation. At least a 3rd RD pick for a starting CB>

Whose bright idea was that? He was worth atleast a third rounder.

    Guys,

Remember, this free agency period got all whacked out when a top 10 receiver (Santonio Holmes) went for a fifth-rounder. That messed up the market pretty good. A 3rd rounder for a on-and-off starter who can make some plays but struggles in man coverage and is undersized, might have been a little much in this market. Not that I don’t think Wilson was worth that, but that’s unfortunately not what GM’s and player personnel people consider in these cases. They rate a player’s value in free agency, as compared to what other players have been traded/acquired for. It’s slotted. Much like the draft.

Derek i am behind you on this one, he was expenable we should have gotten more but We won’t miss him that’s for sure. I’m going to watch this season with even more excitement. I think that our defense is going to come together and our offense is finally going to have some fire. Lets do this! Go hawks

Yeah it was a good move, I was more in favor of Wilson then Jennings I even had him on my screen saver lol… got to replace that one now, glad he is on a team that he likes and where he grew up must be a dream for him, now I hope we can trade locklear for a 3rd draft.

I agree with all the comments. My buds and I were thinking Jennings would get traded first, but I’m comforted by the really good play we’re seeing from Lewis and Marcus Trufant’s re-emergence this year. And Cedric, I’m with you. The more I see the more hope I feel for this year. Maybe Pete Carroll will find his greatness in the NFL, finally. I’m a season ticket holder and really hoping for a better year than the last two. It should be, if we can beat both the Rams and the Cards.
I’m wondering, though, who will return kick-offs for them?

We have a pro bowl return guy in Leon Washington… he’ll be great in that role. Jay – we kind of need Locklear… we are light on the o line right now.
