A Few Weekend Tidbits…
Isaiah Stanback suffered a torn Achilles tendon on Saturday and has been removed from the roster. He has been replaced by Mike Hass who was cut last week to make room for Quinn Pitcock. Stanback had been taking reps at receiver with the third team, competing for a roster spot with Ben Obomanu, Kole Heckendorf and Ruvell Martin.
The Seahawks also announced the release of offensive guard Adrian Martinez, and waived former USC fullback Ryan Powdrell who was signed following the same OTA tryout session that Mike Williams and Reggie Williams initially participated in before being offered contracts.
This leaves Owen Schmitt as the lone true fullback on the roster. However, Quinton Ganther has given coaches confidence that he can play both backfield positions, and his versatility may give the Seahawks the luxury of keeping all of Forsett, Washington, Jones and Ganther.
Not that this would be ideal.
I just don’t see any kind of significant role for Julius Jones on this roster. He’s not the cut-and-go type of runner needed for the Alex Gibbs zone blocking scheme, and he’s certainly not going to bring enough value on special teams to warrant him being buried on the depth chart behind Forsett and Washington (which is where I think he belongs). Ganther has received positive feedback for his showing in camp as a guy who seems to be capable of handling the short-yardage and between-the-tackles duties in the backfield, and thus his versatility should give him an edge over Jones as well.
You can never have too many O-linemen or D-Linemen, so any opportunity to open up a roster spot for an extra lineman should be seized whenever possible. Same goes for wide receiver.
I’ll be at practice on Tuesday afternoon, and will report back with a breakdown that same evening!

One of my main football buddies is a huge redskins fans so we all watch every hawk and skins game (luckily they usually don’t play in the timeslot. When they do, he’s screwed cuz i’m the one with Sunday ticket). I felt all last year that ganther looked better than portis. I was happy we got him.
Ganther is a tough runner, who can move the pile. Something that this team does not currently have, otherwise.
