Seahawks Training Camp: Saturday Morning Session – Defense (webcast style!)
Okay, so we’ve been yackin’ about it for several weeks now, and have finally recorded our first ever webcast. I would call it a podcast if it were downloadable, but rather than go through the hassle of uploading it to a server for download, I figured we’d stream the first one with an imbedded player on a webpage.

Forgive the voice cracks, as I’ve been a bit under the weather today.
Let me know what you think about this format. Always nice to mix it up a bit.
Also, it’s rumored that the Hawks and Russell Okung are nowhere near a deal. It sounds like there’s a tug-o-war going on over Okung’s willingness to sign a 6-year deal. The money probably isn’t the issue, as that has pretty much been set by Williams, Berry, Haden and McClain. The length is rumored to be the issue. Hopefully, the’ll work something out soon. Locklear is not the guy you want covering Hass’s blindside for too long.

Enjoyed the audio format. Very informative and a nice chance of pace from reading the blog. My questions would seem to revolve mostly around the O-Line and D-Line. O-Line wise with a ‘relatively’ young O-Line, a center in Spencer who isn’t panning out as expected, and a new complicated blocking scheme to boot, there just seem to be a LOT of ‘IF’ coming off this team. IF the O-Line can make holes, IF the RB by committee system can find the holes. IF they can do so frequently enough to keep Matt off his well maligned back long enough to get the ball to the receivers. Carroll isn’t a traditional West Coast offense guy. Matt obviously is and has been a WC QB since he got in the league. Offensively where do you stand on filling in those “IF”s and do you think Carrol plans to incorporate more WC plays and terminology to accommodate Matt. Defensively can they get enough push to stop the run and say keep a certain SF running back from going for 250+ every time we play the 9ers or get enough pressure on the QB to keep the corners from being stranded against the likes of Crabtree, Fitzgerald etc…..?
I really enjoyed this, good job. You put it up and ill listen to it. I like to hear more about the O-line once Okung gets his ass signed and on the field. Hear anything more about Okung post ASAP , some more on J.P vs. Charlie who has the better arm, foot work, and is more confident commanding the line.
For a rookie you did well. Is Mike running as 1st or 2nd WR if not who is or are they justtesting all everywhere? Who looks better Fosett or Jones,I here they are spliting reps. evenly.?
Forsett…better, from what I saw. I really think Jones will be replaced on the roster before the season gets underway. Just my gut. For that matter, Ganther looked better than Jones to me as well. He’s a bowling ball. Mike was running as the flaker with the 2nd team, so basically he was the #1 receiver for the second team offense. But, he was in there at flanker on a couple of plays with Matt and the first team as well. Seriously, he looks really good.
As for your Forsett question, during the first morning practice, no, it was not even. I barely saw any Jones action. All Forsett, Ganther and Rankin. Washington was taking punts only, but he’s clearly still recovering.
Come on then, this is an old favourite for winding up my brothers and sisters in the blue. Picture the scene the hawks year has ended in early january and a few days later it is announced that the Hawks are A) on the road to anyone in October at Wembley,UK or B) at home at Wembley. Discuss, excuse me whilst I retire to remember where I left my helmet and body armour after my final tour of Bosnia 12 years years ago. Go Hawks..
Well… audio is tough for me at work so I’ll listen later. I do have to correct Aaron, though. Gore had one good game vs. the Hawks, but that came after Lofa went out. Hawthorne wasn’t ready to run the defense and it showed… two big runs right over where Lofa would have been patrolling. Gore did nothing in the 2nd game. Our rush defense will be fine. My biggest “if” is about our DEs. Will we be able to mount a pass rush from the Leo position? At least we won’t be dropping 8 guys into coverage 45% of the time on 3rd down this year. On offense my only if is will Okung get his butt into camp, and then can he be better than… well… who played more than 3 games at LT last year? As long as he is in and playing it will be a step up.
For the record the defense getting torn up by Gore was what’s known as an EXAMPLE. Nor is the ENTIRE defense made up of 11 Tatupus. The ENTIRE defense was however ranked LAST against wait for it………….THE RUN. It wasn’t just Gore. Everyone ran the ball whenever and wherever they wanted. Then is they committed to the run they’d just spend the day throwing at Marcus “pass interference ” Trufant all day for 20+ yards a pop, who hurt or not was still playing. My entire point was that they STUNK. There’s 0 reason to believe that will change until proven otherwise. Once I see some evidence I can be convinced of that. Until that point I’ll remain skeptical. Not to mention it’s not the first time Gore has torn the Hawks a new one. So with or without Lofa didn’t seem to make a difference.
Where are you getting stats that Seattle had the last ranked defense last year? We were #15 against the run, and that was with a lot of teams running late because they had a big lead. And with Gore’s anomaly of a game. I understand examples – I just think it is a bad one.
We don’t have 11 Tatupu’s, but do you understand the role of the MLB? He’s the QB of the defense, and that part of the position is the one that Hawthorne struggled with. Especially during his first time seeing a lot of PT – he was out of position, as were his teammates, after Lofa left that game.
Our defense has issues, but it is with a pass rush. We need to see DEs that can get to the QB.
We shut MJD down last year when we shutout the jags. That was neat.
